The Zimbabwe Union of journalists is hosting a two day workshop on election reporting in Mutare to train journalists on fair, balanced, articulate and comprehensive reporting ahead of the harmonised elections.

The workshop, which is part of a series of workshops being held across the country, seeks to train to be guided by principles and ethics of journalism to ensure that the electorate is provided with authentic and realistic information that will help them to make choices at the ballot box.

Addressing journalists at the workshop, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Monica Mutsvangwa said media plays a critical role in the upcoming elections.

“Media plays a critical role in informing, educating and entertaining the masses, hence I urge you to stick to the fundamentals of your profession. As key election stakeholders, journalists have an important role to play in facilitating political disputes, fostering transparency and information sharing and they serve as an important forum for the public. All this strengthens democratic processes,” she said.

She said journalists have a major role to play in the development of Manicaland province before and after the elections.

“The reporting you do here determine the way people will view us. If you report to make some politicians happy, we will be viewed in bad light. As journalists, I understand that you come from different media houses with different editorial policies while others are freelancers. It is therefore my humble plea to you that you to save this province by writing fair, accurate and well balanced stories that promote social cohesion and unity,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

She urged journalists to also examine key considerations for gender sensitive reporting by proffering equal coverage for women and men.
