ZIMBABWE National Family Planning Council has called upon women to adopt the usage of loop contraceptive device as it is proving to be more effective in reducing unwanted and early teen pregnancies as compared to other methods.

Speaking during a meeting in Mutare last week, ZNFP’s service delivery co-ordinator, Mr Kennedy Majero, said researches had shown that the loop was 99 percent effective in reducing unwanted pregnancies especially in teens.

“The survey that we conducted as a council around the country showed that despite the free distribution of condoms by Government, most people are reluctant to use them.

This has given rise to early pregnancies which has a negative impact on the development of the country at large,” said Mr Majero

The loop is said to be safe and a long term reversible method. It can last up to 12 years once inserted.

The loop was also said to be cost effective unlike buying pills or condoms on a daily or monthly basis.

“Most people lack knowledge on the advantages of using the loop method. Some women have cultural and social misgivings when it comes to the use of loop.

“There is a misconception that women who uses loop as a contraceptive method are loose. Some are being told that the use of loop is a violation of social norms on fertility. Some associate the use of loop with cancer, but this is not the case,” said Mr Majero.
