3 INFANTRY Brigade in partnership with Forestry Commission of Zimbabwe have embarked on a project to plant trees across Manicaland. The programme was launched at the provincial Zimbabwe National Army Headquarters in Chikanga recently.

The function which was attended by staff from HQ 3 Brigade, their spouses as well as students from both primary and secondary schools located within the barracks saw a total of 2 000 indigenous as well as exotic trees being planted.

Speaking at the occasion, Deputy Commander 3 Infantry Brigade, Colonel Joel Muzvidziwa, said people should plant trees all year round to curb the increasing global warming that is threatening the world.

“Tree planting must be a continuous undertaking all year round despite the fact that Government has set every first Saturday of December as the official tree planting day. As global warming and deforestation take centre stage, we should also double our efforts in planting trees as they are important for our survival,” said Col Muzvidziwa.

Col Muzvidziwa said the exercise should be undertaken in all ZNA units across Manicaland.

“This exercise shall also be rolled out in all ZNA units located here in Manicaland and this year alone, we target to plant 10 000 trees in partnership with Forestry Commission as well as the local communities that surrounds us in our different areas of responsibility,” he said.

This year’s official tree is the endangered Mukamba indigenous tree as well as the Mubvamaropa tree both of which have medicinal functions.

Speaking at the same occasion, Mr Charandura from Forestry Commission, said: “It is important to resuscitate these endangered indigenous trees, both for their medicinal functions as well as preserving them for future generations.”
