MINISTER of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, Cde Patrick Zhuwao, has implored young people to actively participate in the economic activities of their country and desist from being misled to protest against Government.

Cde Zhuwao also hailed the contribution being made by young and upcoming farmers in the provision of the nation’s agricultural requirements, saying they are economic heroes who need Government’s support and recognition.

He said this in Headlands during a field day of a young and budding horticulture farmer, Cde Farai Mapfumo, whom he said was an inspiration to other young people who might want to venture into agriculture, but are hesitant to do so.

“These young farmers’ contributions are the same as the liberators of this country who participated in the war of liberation at a tender age, but right now we are enjoying freedom because of their sacrifice. You should not be hesitant to venture into business because every effort you put, no matter how small will have positive bearing on the country’s economy.

“We have some degreed ‘fools’ who have the audacity to play plastic football in streets claiming that there are no opportunities in the economy, yet young people like Cde Mapfumo are excelling and doing extremely well. That is a hallmark of stupidity and idiocy, you have a degree, but you do not think! They are a disgrace to their parents’ efforts of sending them to universities.

“I am particularly impressed by the wonderful work being done by Cde Mapfumo here considering his age and that he is an orphan carrying his father’s legacy. These are the young people who should be recognised and get support from Government because they direct their energy, resources and time doing productive work,” said Cde Zhuwao.

The 31-year-old Cde Mapfumo has 264 000 cabbage plants, one hectare of potatoes ready for harvesting and potato seed enough for a massive 25 hectares. He has also prepared 50 hectares of land earmarking it for maize under the command agriculture.

Cde Mapfumo said farming was not an easy venture especially with constrained and unreliable funding, but he managed to be strict on his finances and also entered into partnerships with established farmers before going solo. He also urged other youths to take farming seriously as it is a rewarding business if run properly.

“All the cabbages and potatoes here are a result of hard work, resilience and teamwork. Success on farming is a tedious process. We started with a partnership since we didn’t have capital then and the money we shared with my partner is the one I ploughed back.

“Fellow youths must also venture into farming as it is a rewarding venture if managed properly. As youths we must not let down President Mugabe who took the bold decision to distribute land to the landless. We are also ready to embrace command agriculture as we want to play a role in ensuring food security for the country,” he said.
