DANGAMVURA-based Zhakshiraq Pool Club have won the 2016 Mutare Pool League title after shrugging off stiff competition from the 22-member league while the team’s star player, Brighton Nyauchi, was crowned the best outstanding player.

For clinching the title, Zhakshiraq, received a $600 handshake from the pool association.

Masikati from Hobhouse settled for second position while Fantasy, Soul City and Blackstars found themselves in top five.

Speaking during the award ceremony held at Golden Peacock Villa Hotel on Monday, Mutare District Administrator, Mr Edgars Seenza, praised the Mutare Pool League for soldiering on despite the prevailing hard economic conditions that have resulted in some sporting disciplines folding up.

“This is an annual occasion that rewards outstanding pool clubs that excelled during the just ended calendar playing season as well as taking stock of the achievements and challenges that befell the league during the period under review.

I am reliably informed that a total of 22 teams participated in the league this year playing a total of 42 games each. From these simple statistics it is evident that a lot of work was done to get the ball rolling. Administrators did their part to put the house in order while respective clubs did their best to fulfill the fixtures during these harsh economic conditions. We salute you all for a job well done.

“Of course, Zhakshiraq Pool Club performed extremely well to clinch the league title two years in a row but we also want to recognize the efforts made by all the clubs to keep the Mutare Pool League ship afloat. The country is facing hard economic times but, in the absence of a corporate sponsor, respective clubs in the Mutare Pool League stood their ground and sourced the little they managed to pay affiliation fees and other costs related to the fulfillment of their fixtures,” he said and added:

“Apart from promoting healthy lifestyles, the game of pool like any other sporting discipline, forges friendship among participants. Communities are what they are today because of friendship and we would like to thank the Mutare Pool League for promoting oneness in Mutare District.”

Mr Seenza said sporting activities contribute heavily to crime reduction in society.

“It is said that idle minds are very dangerous but I would like to believe that your league has scored a first in trying to offer entertainment and recreation to the youths and the elderly.

When that happens youths refrain from abusing drugs because they have something to do while would-be criminals will discard their ways because they will be playing the game of pool.

“I am told that administrators running this league are doing so for the love of the game without getting meaningful benefits. It will be improper if we do not acknowledge the good work they have done.

They sacrifice a lot to put everything in place; be it doing the fixtures, hosting tournaments, financial accounting and any other relevant tasks that enable the league to flow.

“We encourage the executive to do their roles in a transparent manner, especially when it comes to the handling of finances.

This whole set up will crumble like a deck of cards if we fail to handle monies well. When you do your things correct like what I am witnessing here, it will be easy to lure sponsorship because no corporate organisation wants to associate itself with crooks.

Do your things transparently and the gates will soon open for you,” he said.
