ZIFA Eastern Region broke new ground last Saturday when Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (Pvt) Limited unveiled the Diamond Cup tournament for the league’s top four teams.
The prestigious tournament will officially be launched early next year and it is bankrolled to the tune of $10 000 which is the biggest sponsorship in the history of the ZIFA Eastern Region soccer. Eastern Region secretary-general Wisdom Simba said the finer details would be revealed at the launch at a later date to be advised.
“We are grateful to ZCDC for coming on board. We are excited as a league to have this tournament. We are hoping to stage a successful and exciting event. We will have an official launch and a draw for the tournament early next year. We are very happy as ZIFA. It was long overdue since we had a tournament in the region. It is a morale booster for our clubs. We will start with the top four teams and see how we progress,” he said.
Speaking at the ZIFA Eastern Region awards ceremony held at a local hotel, Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (Pvt) Limited supply chain executive Newton Demba, who was also the guest of honour, said they hoped to maintain a good relationship with the ZIFA Eastern Region.
“I have been following Eastern Region football and I call it the home of football because their administration is so organised and their teams are so disciplined. We are a mining company, with operations in Mutare. As part of our strategy to give back to the community and brand visibility, we are sponsoring the Diamond Cup to the tune of $10 000. Participants will be drawn from the top four teams. We have plans to continue working with the Eastern Region,” he said.
