DIAMOND mining concern – Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) – has strengthened its relationship with local football after launching a $10 000 tournament for teams that finished in the top five from last season.

ZCDC recently formed a new Eastern Region Division One club christened Manica Diamonds FC. The two day tournament starts tomorrow (Saturday) at 12:30pm at Sakubva stadium and end on Sunday.

Buffaloes, Tenax, Masvingo Pirates and Surrey make up the list of the four teams that will partake in the competition and the exclusion of last year’s league winner Mutare City Rovers just on the basis that they are now a Premier League team left many with unanswered questions. Dubbed the Diamond Super Cup, the winner of the tournament will pocket $3 000 while first runners up will walk away with half that amount.

The third placed team will get $1 300. The rest of the amount from the sponsorship package was channelled towards acquisition of uniforms for the participating clubs.

Speaking at the launch of the tournament held at a local hotel, ZCDC acting chief executive Roberto De Pretto said his company is duty bound to plough back to the Manicaland community.

“It is fitting for us to give back to the community and Manicaland at large because that is where ZCDC comes from,” he said.

The Diamond Super Cup is the second cup competition for the Eastern Region Division One League which comes after the demise of the Sylvia Dube Memorial Cup which used to be sponsored annually to the tune of $30 000.
