Zanu-PF youths yesterday turned out in numbers to clean the streets messed up during the two-day violent protests that rocked Mutare. The youths, wearing yellow high-visibility party regalia and holding brooms, worked alongside each other peacefully to gather up debris that characterised the streets following the violent protests that rocked the city on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Most roads in Mutare were barricaded with stones, boulders, logs and burning tyres, among other items the protesters could lay their hands on to detour roads.

The operation by the Zanu PF youths was dubbed “restore sanity”.

The youths, led by their national secretary for finance Cde Getrude Mutandi and provincial youth leader Cde Tawanda Mukodza, moved around removing all the debris that had become an eyesore in the Central Business District (CBD).

Cde Mutandi said the move was meant to re-sanitise the city as the demonstration militated against recent attempts to spruce up cleanliness in the city.

“We have found it befitting to remove objects that were used to barricade roads in and around town as we want to restore sanity.  The demonstrations are against development and as responsible youths we are moving around the city removing all the debris that was used to block the roads.

“We moved around the city centre, moved to Fairbridge and Chikanga. Our target is to move around all suburbs in Mutare,” she said.

Cde Mutandi urged people of Zimbabwe to desist from violent protests and wanton destruction of property.

Cde Mukodza said the exercise will continue until the situation normalises. He said more youths will be engaged to contain the situation.

He said they will not sit and watch as retrogressive elements work against Government to disturb peace in the city.

“We want peace to prevail in our country and as youths we will not sit and watch while these people disturb peace.

They have disturbed our peaceful environment and our mission is to see to it that the situation is contained and returns to normal,” he said.

Police had to use tear gas to displace some demonstrators marching into Mutare CBD.
