MUTARE women last Thursday commemorated Africa Day in style by holding an information sharing seminar aimed at turning the continent into a better one.

The commemorations were held at Jubilee Garden and were attended by scores of women from all walks of life. The event organised by Mrs Locadia Mbofana was focusing on how to improve the business mind of an African woman in order to upgrade her and the community she lives in by investing in business ventures that help generate money for sustainability.

The main speaker was Mrs Elina Mvundura, a businesswoman majoring in farming and catering. “Most women are sitting at home doing nothing, but they should be investing their time in things that help change their status. They should start small and grow with time,” she said.

She told those in attendance that they should do away with the fear factor and said: “It is better to risk by venturing into a small business and gain marginal profits than nothing at all. One should not just wish for something and then fail to accomplish it. Rather aim to achieve whatever you would have thought.”

Women disclosed that it was quite difficult to start businesses in a volatile economy environment. “We know this is new to us as women, but we should have our own trade fares in Mutare as a way of boosting our markets and business opportunities as well. “For we are not there, but we hope will be able to hold functions like the Bulawayo International Trade Fare one day,” said Mrs Mbofana.
