A 39-YEAR-OLD Harare woman was last week duped of her car — a Mazda Familiar — by a fellow congregant who masqueraded as a friend who wanted to offer her some spiritual assistance.
The unsuspecting Perpetual Dekwe of Room 11 Block 15 General, Highfields in Harare befriended a 60-year-old woman in Harare who later teamed up with two knife-wielding assailants — aged 35 and 30 — who duped her of a car and other valuables worth $4 000 on their way to Kriste Mambo in Nyanga.
Both were Johane Masowe Apostolic church members from Harare.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident which happened at 164 km peg along Harare-Mutare highway.
Dekwe met one of the accused, a 60-year-old woman in February at a Johane Masowe Apostolic Church service in Harare. She approached her asking for spiritual assistance and the suspect said she would take her to Kriste Mambo where she could be healed.
They met at Fourth Street and proceeded to Kriste Mambo on April 15, at around 10 am. While on their way, the unknown suspect told Dekwe that she wanted to pick her husband and child. They picked up two people a 35-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man at Matinhidze turn off. One of the accused produced a knife and ordered her to disembark from the vehicle. The other accused took over the steering wheel and drove off at a high speed. They left Dekwe at Matinhidze bus stop.
She made a police report at Rusape Central police station.
“We are appealing to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the trio to contact the nearest police station. The three went away with the car, registration number ABR 2683, and are still at large,” Insp Kakohwa said.
