A BURMA Valley woman on Monday drowned after a fishing boat she was in capsized in Musapa Dam, Chief Zimunya’s area. Patricia Madondo’s body was retrieved on Wednesday by police sub-aqua unit and was taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital mortuary.

According villagers who attended the scene, Madondo tried in vain to swim out of the crocodile-infested dam. She was in the company of Victor Mugomba (36) of Dangamvura who survived the ordeal.

“Madondo used to buy fish for resell in Burma Valley and on that fateful day, she came to the dam intending to buy fish from the fishermen. She could not see anyone and she assumed that the fishermen were on the other side. She got into the boat accompanied  by Victor. She possibly panicked when the boat started shaking before it capsized. The person she was with managed to swim out of danger,” said Gweshengwe.

Police confirmed the incident which happened around 2pm.

“We can confirm the death of Madondo. She was in the company of Victor who was canoeing across the dam intending to buy fish from the fishermen who were across. Water gushed into the canoe and it gradually submerged,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa.

He urged people to stay away from water bodies since chances of drowning will be very high.  No foul play is suspected.
