What happened to modest dressing?

For time immemorial we have had heard the saying” fashion is dynamic.” I am writing this article fully conscious that if you fail to change, change will change you.Welcome and I hope I found you sound.

Evidence of improper dressing is awash. Be it in shopping malls, magazines, internet, Billboards TV commercials and the list is endless. It is my desire in this article that I embark on a quest to try and nature the few seeds of hope that have left in our societies.

T he world has embraced immodesty dressing and yet some of the repercussions are evident and perennially devastating. While body exposure has become a norm in this generation, those we expect to raise concerns are simply watching helplessly and at times enslaved by lustful minds. I thought Jesus warned against this in Matthew 5:28

Even the blind can see today that our dressing has gone haywire and nothing but sexually provocative. It is in our test of dressing that I have realised less is considered better. We have since buried our sense of shame and picked up the “suit yourself character”. My dear sisters and brothers no longer have a granule of shame and body exposure is not an embarrassment anymore.

The words of Prophet Jeremiah are surely hitting hard on us. “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed nor did they know how to blush  (Jeremiah 6:15). People of this era had lost their ability to blush and undeniably many are like such today. I strongly feel that maybe we should retrace the footprints and identify the forbidden fruit that made the parents of humanity Adam and Eve to realise they were naked.

Christians are a unique people (1 Peter 2:9-10) and therefore should neither yield nor conform to the worldly definition of modesty (Romans 12:2). As a people called by the name of Jesus it is essential to define modesty squarely based on what the Bible says. The world does not blush but surely Christians should.

The world certainly has a wrong standard of modesty despite who does it. Celebrity or not, Why can’t we put a gulf between those of the world and believers today. There is some form of apparel that is synonymous with some unpleasant social conduct in the sight of God. Proverbs 7:10 “and behold there met him a woman with the attire of a harlot and subtil of heart”. This makes me think that whatever appearance we have something is associated to it. Unless you do not care or if you are the worst that people can call you then you can dress without giving a damn.

As I conclude Part 1 of this controversial subject let me invite you to 1Thessalonians 5:22 “Abstain from every form of evil” It is wise that whatever dressing we crave for does not represent a form of evil in every sense. Moreover If whatever you do causes someone to stumble then certainly there is need to refrain from it. With the above inspired scriptures in mind, one should always be on the lookout for the stumbling blocks that we might lay in the paths of many.

If in your individual capacity you do not care, surely you should care about the implications of your appearance to others.

Watch out for PART 2
