HELLO, I hope you are all well. Thank you very much to those who gave feedback on my last episode.Nomatter Dirwai and Judith Musiyazviriyo wrote: “ I’m delighted that at least one of the devils antics has been exposed. The world could be better without the prevailing dressing code.”
As promised, welcome to the second edition of WHAT HAPPENED TO MODESTY DRESSING?
Today, we look at the fundamentals of modesty dressing and the first question that creeps into one’s cerebral hemisphere is why do we wear clothes? Do we do so to keep warm? Maybe to look nice and what are your real reasons for putting on clothes? Does it really matter if someone walks around stark naked. If it does, then we can confidently deduce that the only reason why we clothe is purely moral.
That moral basis has standards from God’s word .
We are concerned about origins of and functions of clothes, not because we are anthropologist, but because we are Christians.
The rooting of clothing is in the scriptures .God made Adam and Eve naked, but sin crept in and distorted nakedness.
Immediately they knew they were naked and tried to make coverings from fig leaves. Genesis 3:7.
According to Adam and Eve they had come up with their own standard of clothing and history says their design was just to cover the ‘essentials’ and needless to mention about the durability of the fig leaves.
When God saw that He disagreed with their taste of dressing. God took the responsibility to make what he regarded as proper dressing. Hence, God made tunics of skin and clothed them. We must not ignore the word clothed that is used in this context. It simply means that in their own craftsmanship, Adam and Eve were not clothed.
Even Adam despite being dressed in fig leaves he still referred to himself as having been naked and what God made for him tunics( Hebrew Kethon). This is defined as a robe that falls from the shoulders to the knees and at times running down to angles.
If we claim that Christians are the Lord’s Holy priesthood today, there is wisdom in trying to lay bare what was God’s standard of dressing for the Old Testament priests.
Exodus 28:40-42, the text shows that the priests were supposed to cover their nakedness by putting on something that covers even thighs. Necessary inference then tells us that anything not covering thighs before the Lord is nakedness.
I have seen it relevant that we have a look at probably the most common biblical passage that is used whenever the issue of modesty surfaces and this is 1 Timothy 2:9-10
“ Likewise, women should adorn themselves in modesty apparel with shamefacedness and sobriety …”
I am compelled to believe that when people dress and walk in the streets, the two afore-mentioned traits should be taken with the gravity they carry, shamefacedness and sobriety. If one’s dressing suggests that these are not existent then the society has reasons to despair.
The word modest used in the context can be defined as orderly, well arranged, or descent. It is also defined to a further step as avoidance of sexual explicitness.
This means whenever one is adorn in whatever apparel, it should not have any element of sexual provocation.
One’s dressing must not be that which draws undue attention to oneself. While I am mindful that we should dress in an appealing manner, it is surely a challenge when one is clad in apparel that defines all the contours of a human body.
Inasmuch as the topic is regarded as a lighter matter by a host of people, I am firmly convinced that the degree of immorality has been ballooned by the way we dress.
Surely some cases of rape were avoidable, some unplanned marriages could have been foregone and some souls could have been saved.
As I conclude the subject, let us be abreast of the fact that modesty is neither defined by parents nor environment, but Jehovah Yahweh himself.
Don’t you feel that it is better to have a moral sound generation than having a detestable people who have been contaminated by the desires of the flesh, a people who are convinced that dressing does not really matter while the ripple effects are right before us?
Think seriously about how we dress before we torment another soul.
Let’s not catalyse moral decadence when we can easily be the salt of the world.
“Save yourself from this untoward generation” (Acts 2:40).
Stay blessed till next time!!!!!!
