SPEAKING at the Mutare District Merit awards celebrations held at Mutare Boys High recently, guest of honour Mr Jason Muwandi, applauded the Provincial Education Director for selecting a relevant theme which he said involved all stakeholders, part of whom are Tertiary Education institutions to which he belongs.

“Allow me to share with you the Ministry’s vision that guides and directs our endeavours in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education sector,” said Mr Muwandi. “The Ministry strives to be the lead provider and facilitator of inclusive, quality education for socio-economic transformation by 2010,” added the Mutare Teachers’ College principal.

The theme of the district awards ceremony was ‘Focusing On Effective Implementation Of The New Curriculum’.

Mr Muwandi compared the old and new curriculum and clearly appreciated how the new one added value to the old one.

“Prior to this new curriculum, the old one developed a product who acquired theoretical knowledge and was dependent on being employed. On the contrary, the new curriculum prepares a product who participates in solving socio-economic challenges and employment creation in line with the ZIM-ASSET programme,” he said.

In a wide-ranging speech which emphasised the purpose of the Merit Awards, what the winners gain, exit profile of teachers in training, the headmaster’s mandate to create a child friendly school through the provision of quality infrastructure, equipment and other resources, the School Development Committees, the role of Industry and Commerce and ZIMSEC – the national examination board, Mr Muwandi highlighted the need for cooperation and unity of purpose.

“We need each other in all of this. We need to work together. Gone are the days when school heads, teachers and even students functioned as isolated islands,” reiterated the Guest of Honour.

He lamented the continued primitiveness of some school heads and teachers who are taking too long to realize the wisdom of team work and consultancy; team work with friends and colleagues in the profession and consultancy with experts in different fields or areas of learning.
