CHIPINGE residents will have to grapple with water rationing following the low water levels in its main supplier, Bangazani Dam which is just 33 percent full. The situation is likely to get worse if rains delay by at least two weeks.

Water regulation laws in Zimbabwe outlaws the use of dams with 30 percent full capacity.

Chipinge Town Council chairperson, Councillor Lovemore Huni, confirmed the development and said Chipinge residents may experience more water rationing if does not rain anytime soon.

Cllr Huni, however, said the town council was looking at alternative solutions to address the water situation.

Said Cllr Huni: “The council is working on other alternatives to argument water supply in the town.

“Using our limited resources, the council has so far drilled high yielding solar powered boreholes which are set to augment other existing boreholes.

“Once the solar powered boreholes are commissioned, we will roll out the programme and drill more boreholes.

“We need to drill more boreholes to cope with the expanding settlements. We need to look into the future to ensure that there is constant water supply to residents,” he said. Cllr Huni said the council had embarked on awareness campaigns encouraging residents to save water.

“We are engaging partners such as EMA and ZRP to educate people on the need to conserve our natural resources.  We are discouraging deforestation and stream bank cultivation.

“Chipinge is privileged to have a high water table and we need to maintain this. Once we mobilise resources it will make us easier to tap that water at low cost,” he said.

Calls have been made to desilt Bangazani Dam and evict illegal settlers from its banks who are into stream bank cultivation.
