Upstaging the descendants of Anak

Evangelist Peter Madondo—

HAVING endured tedious years in the wilderness, the children of Israel finally arrived at the borders of the Promised Land. It needed a great tactician to mastermind their invasion of Canaan, otherwise the whole quest would have backfired and the result would have been catastrophic.

In the book of Numbers 13, Moses sent out the 12 spies who were entrusted with the responsibility of spying on the land God had promised the forefathers of Israel. While this sounded very noble, the choice of the men left a lot to be desired, save for the duo of Joshua and Caleb. The only credible thing that the dozen men managed to do was to come back and report discouraging results.

Numbers 13: 33:  “And there we saw the giants, sons of Anak and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers and so we were in their sight.” The land had milk and honey flowing, Canaan indeed had abundant fruits. The spies marvelled at the riches of the land and of course many other things they saw in the Promised Land. The good part having been reported, they decided to amplify the adverse part. It was an open secret that the inhabitants of Canaan were surely going to put up a strong fight in order to protect the land of their ancestors.

The major obstacle that stood in the paths of the Israelites was the descendants of Anak. These were off-springs of Nephillim  who had a  huge stature. By virtue of their size it was evident that they would tremble upon any infiltrators. The Israelites had to content with the hulks of the land.

While we appreciate that the men were gigantic, it is also clear that the majority of the spies were ballooning the challenge that lied ahead. Imagine real men who possibly were the best fighters and intelligent personnel relegating themselves to grasshoppers. While it could be understandable that they were no match in size, did they had to assume that they were like grasshoppers in the sight of the enemy.

It took the courage of Joshua and Caleb to reassure the children of Israel that they would ill conquer.

“And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh which were of them that searched the land rent their clothes and they spoke…… If the Lord delights in us then He will bring us into this land.” (Numbers 14:6-8).

While others were seeing a herculean task ahead, the men of courage were seeing the handiwork of God.

The Red Sea encounter was a greater challenge than a handful of men. They remembered the vicious snakes and the bronze snake and realised that God was able, needless to mention the meals that rained from heaven. That propelled Joshua and Caleb to be pregnant with confidence that: “With God, all things are possible” (Luke 1:37)

Today, my message is directed to those facing the descendants of Anak in their lives. I know as you glance at the challenges that are bedevilling your lives, you are like grasshoppers and you stand no chance. It is not only you, but your close allies have also given you no chance against the problems. It is time to turn the tables and be like Joshua and Caleb. Amid immense opposition, the men stood out and charged the children of Israel to go for it.

Paul writes in Romans 8:31: “What shall we say then, if God be for us, who can be against us.” This should be inspiration enough. When we fight in the corner of Jesus, victory is certain.

I charge you to cast all your burdens to Christ for He is all conquering. Do not worry about the size of your problems, simply cast the burden to Jesus. Be a man and take the challenges head on.

Who knows, it might only require a single day of fasting and praying. No matter how huge Goliath was, it only took one stone to send him to the grave.

As long as you open your spiritual eyes you will see the divine solutions to your seemingly invincible challenges. It is time that we upstage the descendants of Anak.

The more you choose to play second fiddle to the descendents of Anak, you will never reach your full potential. Some giants in our lives a simply hollow and all they need is minimum force to take them down.

Philippians 4: 13 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” As long as we know where to draw strength from, no challenge can be too big to upstage.

Trust in the Lord ad He will give you amazing strength to tackle the sons of Anak. While others will be battling with shivers induced by the sons of Anak , you will be steeping on them towards your goal.

Those who trust in the Lord shall renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31). Put your trust in God whose power reserves never dwindle.

Whenever we grow weary, He is there to rejuvenate us. Even when we are faced with giants of this world, He will multiply our capabilities. No matter how insurmountable our challenges may appear, take them on and upstage the descendants of Anak.

With God, victory is guaranteed.
