THREE family members were killed recently, while one sustained serious injuries when an unlicenced police officer lost control of his Mercedes Benz sedan and ploughed into a Chipinge family coming from church. One of the four family members died on the spot, while two others died upon admission at Chipinge District Hospital. One of the minors who survived is reportedly in a critical condition at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.

The unlicenced police officer, Russell Chaipa, who was clad in police uniform was lucky to escape with minor injuries.

Traffic police officers quickly arrived at the accident scene and ferried the injured and the corpses to hospital. The situation almost turned chaotic as angry members of the public attacked the police officer for causing the accident through reckless driving. Traffic cops had a torrid moment to calm the situation.

The police officer was later escorted to safety.

When The Manica Post arrived at the scene of the accident, a sizeable number of the people had gathered barricading the road in a bid to block a Honda Fit vehicle in which Chaipa had sought refuge.

They were accusing Chaipa of speeding and reckless driving.

In an interview, a tout identified as Trust said: “This vehicle was speeding and I think that caused the accident. The police officer told us that he was recently transferred to Chiadzwa and had came back to sort out a few things here. He visited us at the Mutare Rank where he showed us the new vehicle.

“He picked up one of the touts and drove at a high speed towards the Mutare direction. He lost control of the vehicle on his return resulting in the accident. Chaipa and the tout managed to escape with minor injuries.”

It is understood that Chaipa was recently transferred to Chiadzwa diamond fields and had returned to Chipinge to show off his latest acquisition to his friends.

Chipinge District police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Blessing Kadzuraumera, was not reachable for comment at the time of going to print on Wednesday.

The three family members were buried at Mashiri Village in Chief Mutema’s area on Tuesday.

Chaipa appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Poterai Gwezhira last Saturday facing driving without a licence and culpable homicide charges.

He was remanded out of custody to May 15 for trial. Ms Edith Phiri prosecuted, while Chaipa was not represented.
