A MUTARE tout ran amok and insulted a police officer before biting him in a bid to resist arrest. Fanuel Torayi (25) denied the charges when he appeared before senior Mutare magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura. He is facing charges of assaulting or resisting a police officer as defined in Section 176 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

In his defence, Torayi admitted to resisting arrest, but denied ever biting the cop.

“Your Worship, the police officer in question promised that he would deal with me and make matters worse for me after he had arrested me. All the allegations are false. He is doing this because I resisted his arrest,” he complained to the court.

Torayi was remanded out of custody on $40 bail to August 15 for trial.

“A trial will be conducted and the truth will come out because we do not force a person to plead guilty. However, if after the trial you are convicted of this crime your sentence will be hefty since you would have wasted the court’s time,” said Mrs Chiundura.

It is alleged that Torayi blocked the cop, Mylot Zenzele Mpofu from boarding a commuter omnibus which was loading at Dangamvura Bus Terminus.

“The complainant asked the suspect why he was blocking him. He started shouting obscenities at the complainant. The cop warned the accused person to stop what he was doing, but he persisted,” said Mr Karombe.

Torayi allegedly bit the police officer and fled from the scene. He was, however, later apprehended.
