A 22-year-old Mutare man stunned the court recently when he opted for jail than community service after he was convicted of theft.
Moses Bande of house number 405 Maonde, Sakubva, said doing unpaid work was painful. Mr Tendai Mabwe then slapped him with a 30-day jail term. Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.
The court heard that on September 2 at around 3.30pm, the accused person snatched Evelyn Makaza’s wallet with $20 in it and ran away.
“The complainant started chasing the suspect who threw away the wallet upon realising that he was about to get caught.
“When the complainant checked her wallet, she discovered that the money was missing. She managed to apprehend the accused person and took him to a police station.” Asked by Mr Mabwe why he preferred going to jail than doing community service, Bande said:
“I have had community service before and it is very painful. It’s better I go to jail.”
