ZANU-PF party recently held its 17th Annual National People’s Conference at Umzingwani High School in Esigodini, amid high expectations from the citizenry that the party deliberates on pertinent issues affecting the party and the nation at large.

The conference under the stewardship of its First Secretary and President Mnangagwa did not disappoint, as the path being taken by the government was made clearer in terms of the socio-political-economic development which speaks to the vision 2030, of making the country a middle income economy.

In order to allow delegates to make insightful deliberations on the key issues, a total of six thematic sectors were established for the attention of the delegates.

The six comprised of — state of the economy; provincial economies; liberation war heritage, sports, culture and religion; women affairs and youth affairs.

These strategic thematic committees unpacked issues under their jurisdiction, with no-holds-barred as evidenced by their precise presentations and resolutions.

On the economic front, the conference resolved that Government should intervene expeditiously to eradicate the three-tier pricing distortion in the market; deals decisively with economic malpractice with culprits being punished after a thorough investigation system and robust prosecution system and that there is need to support agricultural and infrastructure programs, among other resolutions.

In order for the country to realise maximum benefit out of the current economic environment, it is important to ensure that there is capacity building and utilisation, among players and critical sectors of the economy, respectively.

The resolution to expedite the establishment of gold centres and across the country and the re-establishment of a revolving fund for small-scale farmers is premised on the realisation that all progressive Zimbabweans have a role to play in rebuilding the country.

As a result there is need to put in place the necessary measures to harness all economic contributors.

This is a clear indication that the ruling party is in the thick of things regarding issues affecting the economy and cognisant of the need to implement remedial measures, if the country is to realise prosperity and development in line with vision 2030.

However, while the economic component of the gathering was most topical, the state of the party was no doubt a sure case for discussion.

Indeed, ZANU-PF appreciates that before Operation Restore Legacy, the state of party affairs were just but a mess hence the need to redefine the party’s objective based on its founding values and principles remained a priority.

This follows the politicking and bickering that characterised the previous regime, particularly during his last days of former President Cde Robert Mugabe in office.

It adversely affected the developmental agenda of the whole country.

Greed, selfish ambitions and factionalism had slowly bred into a form of religion in the party, hence the need to self-introspect and re-organise.

The resolution to uphold the “spirit of unity by putting into place deterrent penalties for perpetrators of factionalism, tribalism and regionalism and several vices that seek to advance the individual interest at the expense of the unity of the party” is testimony of the need to re-brand and rejuvenate the party.

To further buttress the need for unity and strategic planning, all wings of the party unanimously endorsed President Mnangagwa as the sole Presidential candidate for the 2023 harmonised elections.

Although this move has been criticised by some sections of the Zimbabwean society as too forward looking, it is a political statement — a necessary pronouncement that will clear the air of various agenda setting and perception building shenanigans aimed at stroking divisions in the party by its detractors.

The party also showed it’s fully behind President Mnangagwa’s efforts of opening up the democratic space as evidenced by its refusal to endorse a resolution by the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) to increase the minimum age limit for presidential aspirants from 40 to 52.

Many especially in the opposition waited with anxiety to see how the party would address the volatile issue with some detractors concluding that it was a way to fix the MDC Alliance leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

The conference did not disappoint as the issue was never endorsed, much to relief of many, more so those in the opposition. The party is never for vindictive politics and the same cannot be said of the opposition politics, which thrive on people’s suffering for their regime change agenda.

In his closing message to the conference, President Mnangagwa called for unity of purpose, peace, discipline, responsible and servant leadership that is alive to the need to rebuild the party into a formidable political entity to reckon with.

The President also assured delegates that the party and Government would do all in its power to implement the adopted resolutions.

At the end of the day, the party sought and managed to balance between internal and external forces affecting its well-being in its deliberations.

Relatively, the final resolutions which the party adopted, sought to redress the plethora of socio-economic ills that have left a dark cloud hanging above the party and the nation.

If implemented with the requisite wisdom, resolutions by the Zanu-PF conference will strengthen governance system of both the party and Government.

The plan is now in place, what’s left is for Zanu-PF to walk the trajectory as citizens pin their hopes on the revolutionary part for a brighter Zimbabwe.
