The difference between perfumes & deodorants

Ann Ruthenburg —
YOU will be so amazed how many people do not know the difference between perfumes, deodorants, eau de toilette, eau fraiche, eau de parfum, roll-ons, cologne and roll-on stick etc. With the advent of cheap fake scents, with fake names, we will continue to get confused. Many also do not understand what gets sprayed where.

Most importantly, you need to know that the strength of scents and difference in oil, alcohol and water percentage is in each container.

A higher oil base lasts longer. A longer alcohol base smells stronger and a higher water base lasts shorter and does not smell as strong, but is safer to use if you have allergies.

Now if you see something called an eau fraiche, this is the most diluted version of fragrance, usually with one percent to three percent perfume oil in alcohol and water and only lasts for less than an hour (usually sold on the street).

Cologne otherwise known Eau de Cologne which is the oldest term for perfume is the name given to masculine scents.

They are light, fresh and fruity, and typically composed of two to four percent perfume oils in alcohol and water. These tend to be used in fragrances for younger people and only last for about two hours.

Eau de Toilette is a light spray composition with five percent to 15 percent pure perfume essence dissolved in alcohol. This usually lasts for about three hours. Perfume or eau de parfum in days gone by were genderless.

Perfumes under this name usually last the longest containing 15 percent — 20 percent pure perfume essence and lasts for about five to eight hours. Original Perfume are the most concentrated and expensive of all fragrance options.

They are lightly oilier, perfume, or parfum, is composed of 20 percent —30 percent pure perfume essence. You pay a high price for these because a single application of perfume can last up to 24 hours. Now that you know the difference between our body essence aids, here are a few tips.

Do not spray on your clothes please. Most if not all sprays or perfumes stain the clothes and when they mix with your sweat on the clothes, the combination of the smells is negative.

Scents are meant to be placed on your skin to prevent your body odour from coming through. Remember unless you are eating natural foods only; your natural body smell is not natural, so do not be fooled.

Your sweat brings out the odour coming from the inside of your body based on the foods and liquids you eat. Sprays, roll on sticks and roll-on are placed on the underarms.

Colognes are put on the inside of your palms and then patted on the cheeks and chin, even around the neck (since they are for men).

For ladies, put your expensive perfumes in key areas only where your major sweat glands are to give long lasting and maximum odour.

You major sweat glands for perfume are the sides of your neck, the inside of your elbows, the inside of your wrists and the back of your knees. These areas carry your scent for hours and only go if you bath.

Do not, however, put scents on your sweat glands if you suffer from eczema or allergies, this will make them worse. If you suffer from allergies, rather use scented body lotion, Body powder or baby powder, or cologne stick which is hypo allergenic.

Many fragrances will affect those around you negatively that suffer from allergies, it may make them sneeze or give them headaches. So please, be considerate when you wear your perfume.

As much as we all want to smell nice the whole day, please keep in mind that not every smell is appropriate all the time. Light scents are more appropriate for during the day and office jobs.

Heavy scents are better for special events and people in positions such as company owners, CEOs etc. Why because the so-called “Big guys”, usually spend more time socialising and attending events more than sitting behind the desk and they are expected to smell like money.

Also more often than not, they have an office of their own, so their odour will not affect anyone, but those who visit them.

I know it sounds like we are discriminating, but the truth is, unless you have a job where you are alone in an enclosed space, it is not fair to others to have to endure and suffer the effects of your amazing strong perfume.

SPECIAL NOTE — DO NOT spray or put any scent on your private parts, it will burn, itch and give you a rash or infection.
