Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe divinely called prophets throughout the ages have been called by God to give His word to the world. When holy men of God write or speak by the power of the Holy Ghost, their words “shall be scripture, shall be the will of the Lord, shall be the mind of the Lord, shall be the word of the Lord, shall be the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation” (Doctrine and Covenants 68:4). The official, canonised scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often called the standard works, are the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.
Q: Is the Bible the word of God?
A: Like other Christian denominations, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes the Bible to be the word of God, and members are encouraged to study it and follow its teachings.
One Latter-day Saint leader recently said, “It is not by chance or coincidence that we have the Bible today. Righteous individuals were prompted by the Spirit to record both the sacred things they saw and the inspired words they heard and spoke. Other devoted people were prompted to protect and preserve these records. Men like John Wycliffe, the courageous William Tyndale, and Johannes Gutenberg were prompted against much opposition to translate the Bible into language people could understand and to publish it in books people could read. I believe even the scholars of King James had spiritual promptings in their translation work.” (Elder M. Russell Ballard, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles)

Q: Are there other scriptures besides the Bible?
A: Latter-day Saints believe the Bible was not God’s final revelation to humanity and that divine revelation continues to living prophets today. The Church uses the Bible in conjunction with other books of scripture — the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price — which clarify and support biblical teachings.

Q: Isn’t the Bible enough of the word of God?
A: Amos 3:7 reads, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” The Latter-day Saints believe that God continues to work among humankind, and he gives revelations to prophets to accomplish that work, just as He did in the Bible.
God loves His children today, just as He loved His children in all ages of the world. The Church believes that God spoke to prophets anciently and speaks to living prophets today. These are books of scripture that God has revealed which clarify and support biblical teachings.

Q: Do the Latter-day Saints place a high value on the Bible?
A: Yes, they value and indeed love the Bible. Church members are taught to study the scriptures every day. In fact, a 2010 study from the Pew Research Centre found that Latter-day Saints score among the highest of all religious groups in their knowledge of the Bible.

Q: How did we receive the Book of Mormon?
A: While praying in 1823, Joseph Smith was visited by the angel Moroni, an ancient prophet who had lived in the Americas. Moroni told Joseph that God had a work for him to do. He then told Joseph there was a book written on metal plates giving an account of ancient inhabitants of the American continent. He said the book contained the fullness of the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ as it was personally delivered by the Saviour to those people. Joseph was given the plates which he translated by the gift and power of God and published as the Book of Mormon. It goes hand-in-hand with the Bible. In no way does it replace or substitute for the Bible.
