A DEREMBWE Primary School teacher in Marange, Bothwell Chigweshe (33) was recently arrested for causing a scene and destroying property at Chikanga Police Station.

Chigweshe pleaded guilty to Malicious Damage to Property charges as defined in Section 140 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 when he appeared before Mutare magistrate, Miss Perseverance Makala last week.

Kesto Jamu from Zimbabwe Republic Police appeared as the complainant, while Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

The court heard that on April 11, Chigweshe was at ZRP Chikanga charge office where he had been detained for domestic violence when he insulted police officers and his wife.

He was dragged to the temporary holding cells adjacent to the charge office where he was detained.

Mr Karombe said Chigweshe banged the flush door against the wall several times.

He also kicked the door and damaged it in the process.

When asked by Miss Makala why he acted in a barbaric manner, Chigweshe said he was not in the right state of mind.

“Your Worship, I was drunk and I was not thinking straight.

“I was under the influence of alcohol,” said Chigweshe.

The matter was adjourned to yesterday (Thursday) and Chigweshe was remanded in custody.
