In what is suspected to be a kidnapping attempt, a Dangamvura boy alleges that he was ordered to get into a car by unknown men on Monday night and forced into a municipal concrete square drain along Aerodrome Road a short distance from the roundabout.

His plea for help was heard by people passing by, early Tuesday morning. Agnes Maharure who was one of the first people to see Clemence Mbavarira said he was lying on the ground and shivering probably from the cold.

Although Mbavarira is mentally challenged, and some people may dismiss his kidnap allegation because of his mental state, what is baffling is how he could have put the cover of the drain which a single person cannot lift because it is heavy.

“There is no way he could have gone inside and put that heavy lid on. This is a classic case of kidnapping for murder attempt, said a witness who refused to be identified who also told The Manica Post that when he went to see why people were gathered near the security wall of a house along Aerodrome Road, he saw Mbavarira still inside the drain.

By the time The Manica Post arrived at the scene, Mbavarira had been taken out of the drain by people who heard his pleas for help. Both his knees were bruised.

There were police officers who had responded to an alert made by people who had found Mbavarira stuck in the drain. Some of the residents were pleading with the police to take him to the hospital but the police officers said they were waiting for the truck to come.

Irate residents blamed the city council of providing fertile ground for evil minded people. “Look around you, the grass is tall and good cover for criminals, and this is the status quo everywhere,” said one fuming resident. An elderly woman who lives nearby expressed concern about the safety of school children who use the path to and from home.
