THERE was gashing of teeth, quaking of boots and chilling of spines among staffers at Rusape General Hospital following the discovery of a bandaged baboon palm at the reception last Thursday. The strange object, which had five visible fingers, caused panic among the workforce that was on night duty. The incident has raised more questions than answers in light of escalating power struggles at the institution. Though no official comment could be obtained as authorities refused to divulge any information, employees who formed a beeline to catch a glimpse of the strange object were quick to speculate witchcraft links.

The employees also said the placement of the object at the strategic reception area was meant instil fear in them.

“It is true that a strange object, which looked like a baboon hand was discovered at the hospital reception area, sparking panic among those who were on night duty. All wards were left unmanned as workers stampeded to catch a glimpse of it. This incident has left a lot of questions unanswered, and if you link it to power struggles happening here, you cannot avoid concluding that it’s some juju at work. The motive to dump it at the reception was to instil fear,” said a source that refused to be named for fear of victimisation.

Internal sources said a lot has been happening in the hospital corridors since the unearthing of a scandal last year which led to the suspension of the top brass.

“The object was eventually removed by one Kamba who threw it in the incinerator. If you want the pictures we can give you. I don’t think the matter was reported to police,” said another internal source.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakowa said no report was made to police.

“No such report was made to police,” he said.
