TWO members of the special constabulary unit who allegedly fatally assaulted a man and dumped his body in a dam last Wednesday appeared in court facing murder charges.

Sithembikosi Hlungupi (22) and Charles Mlambo (23) of Chindezwa Village under Chief Gwenzi’s area appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Poterai Gwezhira for initial remand. They were remanded in custody to March 27.

Mr Gwezhira advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecuting, Mr Regis Mawarire, said the duo was facing serious charges, adding that there were high chances that they might abscond.

Mr Mawarire said on February 20, the late Munyaradzi Gwenzi had a heated argument with his grandmother, Chigumbeze Gwenzi.

Mr Mawarire said Munyaradzi lost his temper and slapped his granny twice on the face.

“A neighbour, Selina Sithole informed the special constabulary officers-

Muyambo and Hlungupi as well as Brian Chidhukwana who went to look for Munyaradzi and found him at Muzite Business Centre.

“Mlambo and Hlungupi assaulted him using a sjambok and a baton stick. They took Munyaradzi to Chigumbeze Gwenzi’s homestead and told her that they were taking him to Mandere Police Base for further questioning,” he said

Mr Mawarire said Munyaradzi was force-marched to Mlambo’s tuck-shop where they tied him to a tree.

“They took turns to assault him all over the body with the sjambok and baton stick. A villager, Diana Dhliwayo intervened and they untied him and force-marched him to Muzite Business Centre where they continued to assault him while in handcuffs.

“Munyaradzi collapsed and died. They carried the body to Mlambo tuck-shop. Hlungupi rushed to his homestead and came back driving his Toyota Noah vehicle. They lifted and bundled Munyaradzi’s body into the vehicle. They drove to Smaldel Dam where they tied the body to a 23, 5kg stone and threw it in the dam,” said Mr Mawarire who added that:

“The decomposing body was later discovered floating at the edge of the dam by Prosper Zuka on February 28 who made a police report at Chako Business Centre.

“Chigumbeze Gwenzi managed to identify the decomposing body as her grandson who had reported missing.”
