FOR bashing his wife with an iron bar and threatening to kill her, a soldier has been arraigned before the courts.

Responding to the allegations, Nicholas Tafa (30) told the court that his wife was lazy and on the day in question, she had refused to breastfeed the baby who had been crying.

“Your Worship, I woke her up at around 6am since the baby was crying so she could feed him. The fact that she showed disrespect towards me by refusing to feed the baby is the reason why I assaulted her,” he said.

He however dismissed allegations that he had assaulted her with an iron bar and said he used a torch.

Tafa was remanded in custody to January 4 for sentencing to allow the State to check for previous convictions.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of physical abuse.Mutare magistrate, Mr Poterai Gwezhira presided over the matter while Mr Brian Goto prosecuted. Allegations were that on December 20, 2016, Tafa woke up at around 5am and started shouting at Regina Chikarawa, his wife threatening that he was going to kill her because she had refused to leave his house.

He went on to assault Chikarawa with a one-metre-long iron bar on her left hand. Chikarawa sustained a deep cut on the head and was referred to Mutare Provincial Hospital .
