A MUTARE man has been hauled before the courts on allegations of smuggling 1 000 litres of diesel into the country from Mozambique.

Kennedy Manyengerere (39) of House Number 5240 Chikanga 3 who is denying the charges was granted $200 bail by magistrate Ms Jesyy Kufa pending trial.

He is being represented by Mr Steven Chikamhi of Mvere, Chikamhi and Mareyanadzo Legal Practitioners. The matter goes for trial on November 22.

As part of his bail conditions Manyengerere was ordered to keep residing at his given address and not to interfere with State witnesses. Mr Fletcher Karombe prosecuted.

He is facing charges of contravening Section 182 of the Customs and Exercise Act, Chapter 23:02, otherwise known as smuggling.

Allegations were that detectives received information to the effect the suspect was driving a Madza truck (ACO 0067) loaded with the smuggled diesel from Mozambique. They laid an ambush near Marymount base.

“On November 7, 2016 and at around 9am, the said motor vehicle arrived and was stopped. After introducing themselves, a search was conducted in the vehicle. They recovered a total of 39 containers with 25 litre of diesel each as well as a 2-litre container with diesel.

“The suspect admitted to being the owner of the fuel but he failed to satisfactorily explain how and why he was in possession of the fuel. He was then arrested and escorted to the Minerals and Border Control Unit at Forbes Border Post for documentation,” said Mr Karombe.
