TWO security guards allegedly connived to steal goods worth $4 000 at Bilcrow Wholesale at Checheche Growth Point in Chipinge South and went on to open a tuck-shop.

Taurai Chibvepi (35) of Pascal Security Company and Norbert Misihairambwi (22) of Golden Eyes Security appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mr Poterai Gwezhira on Tuesday facing theft charges.

They pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody as the State led by Mr Regis Mawarire successfully opposed bail.

Mr Mawarire alleged that during the period extending from May 1 to June 7 and at Bilcrow Wholesale, the two broke into the wholesale and stole various goods.

He said Chibvepi and Misihairambwi were employed by two different security companies which were contracted to guard Bilcrow Wholesale during the night from outside the premise.

“While they were on duty, they broke into the wholesale after tactfully removing a glass panel from the door. They also tempered with a burglar bar.

“They stole various goods while inside. After stealing they fitted the panel back into its position. They took their loot to their houses and to a tuck-shop that they had opened at the same growth point,” he said.

Mr Mawarire said on June 7, the wholesale supervisor, Mr Derrick Mudzidzwa, received a tip-off that the two had opened a tuck-shop and were offering low prices.

“Mudzidzwa carried out his own investigations before making a police report leading to the two’s arrest. Police made a follow-up to the two’s houses and searched them in the presence of the wholesale employees.

“Some of the stolen goods were recovered hidden underneath their beds.

“A search was also carried out at the tuck-shop where more goods were recovered. All the recovered grocery goods were positively identified by the wholesale employees. The value of the stolen property was $4 152, 67 and goods worth $1 201, 15 were recovered,” said Mr Mawarire.

The matter was adjourned to next Monday for trial.
