Saungweme dominates Manica Cycle Challenge

31-YEAR-OLD Mutare cyclist, Godfrey Saungweme, who is also the Manicaland Cycling team coach romped to victory in the B category of the recent two-day Manica Cycle Challenge.
The Manica Cycle challenge saw participants competing in the undulating terrain in three categories — Elite A, Elite B and juniors.
In Group A, with a time trial of 21 minutes, 19 seconds for the 12,8km race, the winner, Nkulumo Dube went on to complete the 70km Odzani first leg race in two hours, 14 minutes, 49 seconds before completing the 35km Vumba contest in one hour, 11 minutes and 48 seconds to post an overall of three hours, 47 minutes and 56 seconds and claim pole position.
Advocate Phiri, Shine Doko and Aaron Chingundu came second, third and fourth, respectively.
However, it was Mutare’s Saungweme who continued with his fine run in the B category as he registered a time trial of 24 minutes, 37 seconds in the 12,8km race.
Saungweme went on to complete the 70km Odzani race in two hours, 26 minutes and 41 seconds before crossing the line in the Vumba 35km competition in 1 hour, 17 minutes and 47 seconds to post an overall of four hours, nine minutes and five seconds.
Kelvin Maengamhuru, Blessing Musamba and Jacob Musiwashata came second, third and fourth respectively in the B category.
In the juniors, Willom Zengeni ruled the roost as he came first after posting an overall of five hours, 12 minutes and 37 seconds for the time trail, the Odzani race as well as the Vumba contest.
Duncan Zengeni was second after posting an overall of five hours, 23 minutes and 25 seconds, while Hyden Musamba was third with an overall of six hours, 10 minutes and 52 seconds.
However, the undulating terrain got the better of three of the B category participants Oliver Chifiri, Karindo Mapereka, Luke Nukitai and Isiah Mwatsika as they failed to complete the race.
