LEARNING came to a standstill at Tonhorai Primary School in Chimanimani as parents protested against a teacher whom they accused of luring and initiating pupils into alleged Satanism.

The riotous villagers were last Monday chanting revolutionary songs as they barricaded the school entrance. The incident came barely three weeks after a similar one at the nearby Nyanyadzi High School which was triggered by the sudden illness of a student related to a teacher at the school. The mysterious ailment prompted the victim’s relatives and villagers to consult a traditional healer that pointed an accusing finger at the female teacher at the school.

Manicaland provincial education director Mr Edward Shumba confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.

“I haven’t received the official report as yet and there are people on the ground looking into the matter, but all I can say is that Satanism is something that we do not tolerate in our schools. These people who are perpetrating Satanism in schools are destroying our communities and the future generation of the nation. We do not tolerate such behaviour in the education system,” he said.

The Manica Post established that a teacher at Tonhorai (name withheld) has allegedly appeared countless times in the dreams of a Grade Five student, instructing her to collect maggots. The suspect would also ask the victim child to visit mysterious places in the spiritual world, it is alleged. The child would allegedly mumble meaningless words while dreaming. The student was allegedly vomiting incessantly recently.

Chimanimani Rural District Council representative Clr Itai Chimhete said the parents who had demonstrated were later attacked by thugs hired by the teacher.

The situation, he said, was tense.

“Police officers, including those from the Support Unit were called in to make sure there was peace. Parents demanded that the teacher be removed from the school, but the headmaster Mr Cainosi Nyoni refused to co-operate because he has no such powers. He said it was not part of his duty to do that,” said Clr Chimhete.

It is understood that the matter was reported to Headman Gudyanga.

“People got furious and protested that the teacher in question should leave the school. She became arrogant, and summoned a gang of thugs to ambush the villagers who had protested against her,” said Clr Chimhete.

Mr Joshua Sigauke (20) was one of the gang’s victims.

“We were asked to gather at the school by the local traditional leader as the affected child narrated her sad ordeal and dreams concerning the teacher. After the protest we went to the bar to watch a soccer game, and then a gang of thugs was unleashed on us by the teacher’s relatives. They ordered us to evacuate the bar. The y were seven men and one of them ambushed us and waylaid Trueman. They took him to the teacher’s house where they seriously beat him. He sustained bruises on his upper body,” said Mr Sigauke.
