Salvation Army gives to needy community

SALVATIONA Army Church Manicaland division donated food hampers to more than one hundred households in the Matanda area in Mutare district in efforts to alleviate hunger in Manicaland region.

The move was to supplement Government efforts in the eradication of poverty in communities.

The church donated 200 bags of maize meal, 200 litres of cooking oil and 500kg of beans to one hundred families.

Salvation Army Manicaland division Captain S B Chigiya said the donation would help alleviate hunger in the community.

“As we know that we are undergoing a period of drought as a nation, this is such a time that needs collective efforts from other organizations and stakeholders. It is the duty of everyone to be all that observant to any need that arise within communities, thus we are here to witness the fulfilment of the motto: Where there is a need there is The Salvation Army.

“Such powerful words are seen in action in times like these where our people are suffering and are in great need of help. We appreciate the leadership of the church with such a noble cause to support all Government efforts in the eradication of poverty,’’ he said.

Speaking at the same event Minister of State for Manicaland Affairs Cde Mandi Chimene represented by the Deputy Director in the office of the President Mr Lucky Basopo said an army is created to defend a people’s sovereignty. When it has guns and full ammunition you are assured of a win in a war situation.

“The salvation army has fought a noble cause in the sense of building, co-operation, oneness, salvation and improving that the church works hand in hand with the government. The church has complemented the Government effort in trying to alleviate hunger and starvation in our communities,’’ she said

Added minister Chimene: “The church has in way embraced the Zim Asset programme by fulfilling the cluster of operating a full scale food security and nutrition that is responsible for ensuring that all food security and nutrition issues are addressed.”

The Salvation Army has carried out similar relief food distribution programme in Masvingo region.
