THREE armed robbers who last week robbed a Rusape taxi driver of his car at knife point were convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment.
The trio, Desire Mutambara (23), Junior John Musabayana (27) of Area 16, Dangamvura and Norest Kusema (19) of Rujeko Village under Chief Makoni’s area who were self actors pleaded guilty when they appeared before Rusape provincial magistrate, Mr Shane Kubonera.

Mr Kubonera sentenced them to four years in prison before suspending one year on condition of good behaviour. One month was further suspended on condition they restitute $7 each to the taxi owner.

Public Prosecutor, Mr Tafara Chawatama, told the court that the trio disguised as genuine customers and hired Shepherd Majoni (34) to ferry them from Vengere to Magamba where they later produced a knife and screw drivers. They robbed him of his car.

“On February 6, 2017 at around 2am, Shepherd Majoni parked his Toyota Sprinter, Registration Number ABO 2865 at Neighbours Nite Club waiting for customers when he was hired by the accused persons to ferry them to Magamba.

“When they approached Magamba Turn-off at 172 km peg along Harare–Mutare Highway, Kusema who was sitting behind Majoni produced a knife and grabbed him by the neck.

He ordered him to park and switch off the vehicle and he complied. Mutambara and Musabayana produced screw drivers, dragged Majoni to the back seat and threatened to kill him if he resisted.

“Mutambara then drove the vehicle towards Nyazura. Along the way, Musabayana and Kusema who were flanking Majoni, searched him and stole $37, cellphone and stripped him off his pair of shoes, a black track bottom and jacket.

“When they reached Zimati Farm, the three accused persons forced Majoni off the vehicle and drove towards Nyazura. The same day at around 8am, detectives who were patrolling in Nyazura picked up information to the effect that the hijacked vehicle had been spotted in Nyazura.

They reacted swiftly and arrested the accused persons. They also recovered the vehicle,” he said.

The three were arrested while in possession of the kitchen knife and screw drivers which they had used to commit the crime together with the cellphone and $15.
Value of the total stolen property is $3 602 and the recovered is $3 580.
