THE Officer Commanding Rusape District, Chief Superintendent Garikai Gwangwava, has issued a prohibition order banning the possession of dangerous weapons in public places for the next three months.

The ban on dangerous weapons follows an upsurge in their use in criminal activities such as murder, robbery and other crimes.

Since December 2016 to date, six people were murdered using weapons in Rusape which is the largest policing district in Manicaland as it also covers Buhera District.

Chief Supt Gwangwava said he was invoking Section 14 (1) of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA), Chapter 11.17 to ban the weapons from April 11 2017 to July 11 2017.

“I Garikai Gwangwava, being the Officer Commanding Police Rusape District, believe on reasonable grounds that the carrying in public whether openly or concealment in a public place or public thoroughfare or public display of any of the following weapons, catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives, spears or daggers and any traditional weapons whatsoever is likely to occasion public disorder or a breach of the peace, hereby issue an order prohibiting the carrying of such weapons in Rusape District or any part thereof for a period not exceeding three months, that is from April 11, 2017 to July 11, 2017.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is declared that in terms of Section 14(4) of the Public Order and Security Act, Chapter 11:17, any person failing to comply with such a prohibition made under Subsection (1) shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level five or imprisonment for six months or to both such fine and such imprisonment,” reads the prohibition order.
