POLICE in Rusape and Nyanga have issued prohibition orders banning the possession of weapons in public places until the end of August 2018 to allow the ongoing electoral process to proceed and end without violence.
Rusape is one of the largest policing districts in the country as it also covers Buhera.
The Officer Commanding police Rusape Chief Superintendent Garikai Gwangwava and Officer Commanding police Nyanga Chief Superintendent Nyaradzo Mupita invoked Section 14 (1) of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) Chapter 11.17 to ban the weapons from July 15 to August 30, 2018.
“Being the Regulatory Authority for Rusape Police in terms of Section 4 (1) of Public Order and Security Act Chapter 11.17 , I do herby give a notice of temporary prohibition of carrying in a public (whether openly or by concealment) place or public thoroughfare or public display in terms of Section 14 (2) as read with Section 14 (1) of the said act.
“The prohibition shall be from July 15, 2018 to August 30, 2018 unless it is revoked earlier than August 30, 2018.
The weapons that with subject to the ban are (a) catapults, knives, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords or daggers (b) traditional weapons such as spears or the like weapons whatsoever deemed to occasion public disorder or a breach of the peace in Rusape Police District,” reads the prohibition order.
Makoni, Nyanga and Buhera districts are peaceful and calm as political parties and candidates run around canvassing for support, heeding President Mnangagwa’s call on political actors to observe peace before, during and after elections.
