A Rusape man who was offered overnight accommodation by his relatives allegedly betrayed the trust bestowed on him by raping the family’s daughter. Shadreck Ndaba (21) of Bvekerwa Village in Chief Tandi’s area who was not represented and pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Rusape regional magistrate Mr Livingstone Chipadza was remanded in custody to January 16 for trial.

Rusape District prosecutor Mr Tirivanhu Mutyasira told the court that Ndaba asked for a place to sleep at a relative’s house in Vengere Township. The following morning when the complainant’s mother left the house, he allegedly raped the family’s 12-year-old daughter.

“On December 15, Shadreck Ndaba proceeded to the complainant’s homestead in Vengere Township and asked for a place to sleep as it was a bit late for him to travel back to Bvekerwa Village. On December 16 at around 7am, the accused person woke up and prepared to go to Mugodo Lodge. The complainant’s mother left for Vengere Market where she works.

“Ndaba did not go anywhere, but rather asked the complainant to open the bedroom door so that he could watch television. The complainant went into the bedroom and accused followed her and locked the door.  He raped the complainant,” said Mr Mutyasira.

He added: “The accused person opened the door and went back to bed. At that moment, the complainant’s mother arrived and saw the accused person and complainant lying on the bed both with their pair of trousers at knee level. The complainant narrated to her mother what had happened. She lodged a police report leading to Ndaba’s arrest,” said Mr Mutyasira.
