RESIDENTS of Mutare’s Westlea medium-density suburb fatally assaulted a 21-year-old burglar after he was caught stealing from one of the houses in the area.

Talkmore Chinyanga of House Number 2668, Chikanga 2 died upon admission at Mutare Provincial Hospital from the injuries he sustained from the mob attack. Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda, said detectives were looking for the suspects who fatally assaulted the thief.

“As soon as we have names of the suspects we will give you, but what I can tell you is that homicide detectives are doing their work to bring to book all those who beat up the deceased,” he said.

It is alleged that last Friday at around 2pm, Locadia Madzimure (20) of House Number 115, Aerodrome Road, Westlea was at home preparing lunch when she heard a voice calling from the road that someone had broken into her house through the window. She rushed to the back of the house and discovered that window louvres to the sitting room had been removed and the burglar bars had been folded upwards. Madzimure peeped through the window and saw Chinyanga in the sitting room. He was in possession of a bag containing three drying towels, one hair blower, 500 grammes Surf powder, body spray, a Samsung cellphone and a Nokia C3 cellphone. The property had been stolen from Alice Mashana who is a tenant at the house. Madzimure raised alarm and passers-by came to her rescue.

They assaulted Chinyanga all over the body. A neighbour, Mr Zakaria Sithole (45) who resides at Number 117, Aerodrome Road rushed to Mutare Central Police Station and made an unlawful entry report. A swift reaction was made by the police and Chinyanga was arrested at Madzimure’s house. He was taken to ZRP Mutare Central Police Station.

However, Chinyanga’s health deteriorated and he was referred to Mutare Provincial Hospital where he was admitted.

The following day on April 22 at around 7am, Chinyanga’s father went to Mutare Provincial Hospital intending to visit him. Upon arrival he was informed by the medical staff that his son had passed on an hour earlier. He subsequently went to the police and made a report to that effect.
