A SELF-proclaimed prophet from Mutare’s Dangamvura high-density suburb allegedly raped a mentally-challenged girl recently.

Matthew Elias Matikitiwa (29) from Dangamvura pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe.

He was remanded in custody to April 4 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Public prosecutor, Mr Matthew Chimutunga, told the court that in March, the complainant visited the suspect at his shrine seeking spiritual healing.

“The complainant wanted deliverance and she visited the shrine alone. The suspect took advantage of her desperation and told her that he had received an instruction from the spirit that she must be intimate with him.

“He raped her and later gave her some face oil claiming it was going to cleanse her spirits. The suspect then dismissed the complainant and instructed her not to tell anyone about the case,” he said.

The complainant later revealed the incident leading to the prophet’s arrest.
