A ZIMBABWE Prisons and Correctional Services officer is lucky to be alive after he was severely assaulted by three unknown hooligans at a pool match in Dangamvura last Sunday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Marcus Mapfunde of 177 Area 13 in Dangamvura fell unconscious and was rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital after he bled profusely from cuts he sustained during the assault. The incident happened at Matongo Business Centre at around 7:30pm.

The trio fled the scene soon after committing the crime. They are still at large. Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident.

“We urge people to solve differences amicably other than resorting to violence. People, especially adults, should solve issues maturely and amicably,” he said. He said the trio intercepted a match and took a pool ball forcing the match to end abruptly. They started assaulting Mapfunde with clenched fists and boots. They further assaulted him with empty bottles.

He sustained a deep cut on his head as well as a swollen eye. They dragged him. He collapsed and was quickly rushed to Mutare Provincial Hospital. A case was reported to police who attended the scene.

“We have since launched a manhunt to bring to book the three culprits who disappeared soon after assaulting Mapfunde. Anyone with information leading to their arrest should contact nearest police station,” added Insp Kakohwa.
