ELECTRICITY is one of the major causes of both home and industrial fires. Most of these fires are attributed to faulty electrical appliances, over loading of electrical sockets, short circuits, worn out insulation and carelessness with electrical appliances. However, electrical fires can be avoided by adhering to the following general fire safety tips;

Things to do:
Have all electrical work and repairs done by a qualified electrician,
Only plug one appliance such as heater or electrical kettle into one electrical socket at a time,
Check the conditions of your wiring regularly,
Check your sockets regularly,
Turn off all electrical equipment you are not using and pull it out of the socket,
Keep electrical items in good working order.
Things not to do:
Do not over-load an adapter or socket,
Do not put electrical heaters near curtains or furniture,
Do not store combustible material near meter boxes,
Do not use extension cords for major electrical appliances such as stoves, washers or refrigerators, but plug them directly into a wall socket,
Do not allow electrical cords to run across doorway or under carpets,
Do not use bulbs that have a wrong wattage for the fittings

If you have got a problem with blowing fuses, tripping circuit breakers, discoloured or warm sockets, sparks from outlets, flickering lights, or a tingling feeling when you touch an electrical appliance please call a qualified electrician.
