Hello everyone, we are winding down winter and getting to spring in a few weeks! Yepee!
So many have messaged me and asked me for natural remedies for flu. Yes, I have been called the “Manyika Queen” of natural remedies, but what people must realise is that some diseases and/or some illnesses do not go away simply by taking remedies. Flu is one such illness.
Flu is a viral infection. People confuse flu and colds. A cold is the beginning stage of the flu and may or may not lead to the flu.
General symptoms of flu include increased mucus production and inflammation of areas surrounding the nose and throat. General symptoms of flu are headache and musculoskeletal pain.
Once the flu becomes bronchial (bronchitis), it has thick, yellow or green mucus and a cough. Please, see a doctor immediately when this becomes the case.
Now at this time, let me tell you that no food alone cures colds or flu, nor in reality does antibiotics or other medication. It is your own body that defence or fight the viral infection.
So why do why take medication?
Firstly to help your body fight the virus and to ease the discomfort/pain that the illness causes. It is necessary to take your antibiotics from beginning to end and to eat correctly during that time to help your body do its job.
People do say that flu takes a minimum of five days to go away once it is fully blown.
This brings me to the title of this story, we must prevent getting the flu or cold. Prevention is better than cure, you hear this all the time. So here are my tried and tested flu prevention natural remedies.
Once I sense I am getting a cold, I reduce my sugar, milk and salt intake. In some cases I eliminate the sugar and milk. Sugars reduce the immune response to infections. I then increase my daily intake of Vitamin C through Citrus fruits.
Increase your vegetables.
Garlic — Is a natural anti-fungal and antibacterial that can help kick almost any illness to the curb. It is also a natural antibiotic. Garlic loses its potency when cooked, so it’s best taken raw during times of sickness. Take one clove of garlic daily (Crush it if you have ulcer or place in soup).
Raw Honey — Is another immune system booster that also helps the body fight or prevent a cold or flu faster. Did you know studies have determined that children who get a dose of raw honey cough less and sleep better than those who get cough and cold medicines? There are also no side effects. Make sure you choose a good quality raw honey. Take one teaspoon of honey three times a day (breakfast, lunch & dinner).
Ginger — Is an anti-viral substance. Ginger is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and also an antioxidant. Ginger also soothes the stomach and throat, has properties to suppress a cough, and is considered a natural pain and fever reducer. If you make hot ginger tea, you can breathe in the hot elixir and help clear your nasal passages. You can make your own ginger ale and benefit from real ginger.
I am not a medical doctor, the point of this advice is to help you stay healthy, feel your best and look your best and possibly prevent a full blown illness. However, if you do have a cold or flu, please go and see a medical practitioner immediately.
The early you catch it the easier it will be to deal with it. And please complete the medication that they give you. If you do not, the virus could adapt to the medication, and cause the flu return even stronger.
Until next week stay healthy and God bless.
