A DANCEHALL disc jockey who made the headlines recently after a photograph of him donning a police cap went viral on social media networks was on Tuesday arrested by the police.
Manicaland police spokesman, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa, revealed that police had apprehended Alvin Mazani, who was on the run since last week.
He, however, was released on summons pending investigations as police are yet to get to the bottom of the case.
“Mazani was arrested on Tuesday and was released on summons pending investigations. This will help the police ascertain what really took place.
“He, however, will be summoned for court depending on the outcome of our investigations. I, however, warn members of the public to desist from disrespecting uniforms of the uniformed forces by putting them on as it is a punishable offence,” said Insp Kakohwa.
Mazani — popularly known as the General — is the leading DJ of well-known Dangamvura-based music ensemble, Action Fyre.
He was facing charges of unlawful possession or wearing a police uniform as defined in Section 32 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.
The law states that any person who wears any uniforms or distinctive badge or button of the Police Force or anything which might reasonably be mistaken for such uniform, badge or button as to be likely to deceive, shall, unless (a) he is a member of the Police Force entitled by reason of his appointment, rank or designation to wear such uniform, badge or button; or (b) he has been granted permission by the Commissioner to wear such uniform, badge button; be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding six months or to both such fine and such imprisonment.
