THE Mutare Pool League was last Saturday plunged into mourning following the death of the league’s treasurer — Simbarashe Mundungu — who had been admitted at Eland Hospital after a short illness.Mundungu, popularly known as Mapepa, complained of a chronic headache which got worse last week and was rushed to hospital for treatment. He was on Tuesday buried at his rural home in Bikita. MPL chairman, Steven Chingwingwi, said the death of Mapepa came as a surprise. He said the league had been robbed of a dedicated executive member who stirred crucial operations.

“We have been dealt a heavy blow and I don’t have the right words to explain or describe the void that has been created by the passing on of Mapepa. We will miss him so much. Mapepa was committed to his duties as our treasurer. He was honest and everyone was confident with the way he handled our finances. We had no complaints,” he said and added:

“We are going to come up with a memorial tournament to honour him for the great job he did to the association. The proceeds from that tournament will be given to his family. We are going to miss his services. May his soul rest in peace.”

Hundreds of MPL players from all the 22 clubs in the league thronged Mapepa’s residence in Dangamvura over the weekend to pay their last respects to their executive member.

Speaker after speaker spoke highly of the good working relations the deceased had with his colleagues. The league cancelled all leagues games that were slated for Sunday to enable teams to attend the funeral.

Normal play resumes this weekend.
