FIREBRAND Diamond Pool League outfit – Zhakshiraq – came out tops at the just ended one-man tournament played in Dangamvura over the weekend with three players from the club grabbing all the silverware.

Brighton Nyauchi was crowned the winner of the competition that saw more than 150 players partaking in the two-day fete played at Villa Spot last Saturday and Sunday.

His teammates, Ernest “Muchawa” Mupereri and Marvelous “Sir Villa” Chigwada were placed second and third respectively, while DPL vice-chairman, Albert Mataga who plays for Tagaz settled for fourth position.

The winners walked away with various cash prizes.

Speaking at the tournament, Mutare mayor, Tatenda Nhamarare, praised DPL interim executive for coming up with a competition that unites people.

He said sport was an integral part to foster social cohesion as well as exercising the body and mind for healthy living.

Nhamarare, however, urged the DPL interim committee to handle funds well to avoid a repeat of what happened at the Mutare Pool League.

“I am glad and I feel honoured to be the guest of honour at this competition which you have dubbed ‘one-man’ tournament.

“I am told that this is the first tournament to be hosted by the newly formed Diamond Pool League.

“I think all of us know the history that resulted in the formation of DPL.

“We read it in the Press and we also heard the rumours about the disappearing of some funds.

“I am happy that this new executive has begun its job on a high note by hosting a successful tournament.

“After hosting this tournament we don’t want the new committee to be involved in fraudulent activities because we said it is a thing of the past and this is a new dispensation.

“This is an exciting game which is being tainted by theft and misappropriation of funds that will have been paid by member clubs to the association as affiliation fees, fines and player registrations. Please don’t steal from players because it kills the game,” he said.

DPL chairman, Mcdonald Jera, said the interim committee was focused on promoting pool in the community by hosting numerous competitions that bring people together.

He said all financial matters would be made public to enable member clubs to see how the funds are being handled.

Meanwhile, league games resume this weekend at various venues in the city.
