Pleasant surprises of support

The ManicaPost

Morris Mtisi

IN an unusual but pleasant twist of the norm where parents busy themselves fighting headmasters, a parent and young man at Checheche Growth Point came to see me and thank me for heeding to the call by the school head Mr Charles  Manditsvanga who organised the consultancy programme for teachers and students of English Language at Checheche and teachers from Katanga, Mutandahwe and Takwirira High Schools.

“I have come here to see you Mr Mtisi and thank you for coming to assist our children and teachers and sharing what you know about the teaching and learning of English Language,” said Mr John Madhodha.

“We support our headmaster because this is our school — not his. Its success means our own success as a community.

“Its failure likewise is our failure. We have no other school except this one and we cannot afford to let it die in our hands,” said Madhodha whose children have all passed through Checheche High School and only one is still at the school.

Mr John Madhodha who is not a member of the SDC but only a parent proud of his school was accompanied by a young man, one Crosswell Goko who expressed similar sentiments about the school.

Lesson learnt: While some parents are busy making noise and fighting school heads, some find it prudent and wise to support them for they,(those school heads) are agents of change and development in communities and not just job owners called civil servants running schools like their private tuck shops.

This was the first time this reporter had seen ‘outsiders’ come in to show solidarity, support, for what they called their headmaster and their school working for community development. I remember Mr Moses Mukoyi’s accurate observation, “It’s amazing how there is always something to learn from every school you visit.”

This parent and young man pleasantly amazed me.

“And beyond the amazement I learnt civilisation at its best in a place and area no one would expect to witness such levels of enlightenment.
