ZION Christian Church pastor, Pastor Innocent Mhizha last Friday donated lunch to female prison inmates at Mutare Remand Prison.

Pastor Mhizha was accompanied by Pastor Charles Fananidzayi.

“Together with my wife we thought of donating lunch to female inmates. This was inspired by our fasting when we found it fit to give something to inmates,” said Pastor Mhizha.

He added: “Even though you are in prison you are still part of us. The Bible encourages us to give to the needy.”

Pastor Fananidzayi also gave words of reassurance to the inmates citing a script from the Bible, Jeremiah 10:19.

“It is important for one to realise and accept their fate, but should also have faith that such a moment in life will pass,” he said

They donated two-piecer meals from Chicken Inn as well as bread. The inmates also received soft drink beverages.

One of the inmates, Rudo Vambe, said: “We are very grateful for the lunch. It has been a while since we ate tasty food in these cells. Thank you for remembering us Pastor Mhizha.” In response, Pastor Mhizha, said: “I am aware of other issues concerning inmate’s upkeep in prison and in the near future we will donate more.”

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services’ public relations officer, Principal Prison Officer Liberty Mhlanga, said the situation at the prison pertaining food was not healthy.

He appealed to well-wishers to donate cooking oil, beans or animal protein, sugar and peanut butter as supplies have dwindled.

Principal Prison Officer Mhlanga said those interested in donating could officers-in-charge or ZPCS Public Relations office at provincial level.

He also urged relatives of inmates to visit them as this can help in breaking the crime vicious circle.
