MORE than 600 athletes are expected to rub shoulders in the undulating terrains of the Eastern Highlands when this year’s edition of the annual Old Mutual Vumba 2016 Half Marathon gets underway tomorrow (Saturday).

One of the highly regarded events on the Manicaland Athletics Board season calendar, the Old Mutual Vumba Half Marathon is taking place at the Vumba Botanical Gardens.

The event is comprised of 21km, 10km and 5km fun run.

MAB secretary, Taurai Gatsi, confirmed that preparations for the event are at an advanced stage.

“This year’s edition is going to be an amazing event because thorough preparations were done. We are now making final touches to the technical aspects of the event.

“We are inviting all athletes, clubs, schools, tertiary institutions and independent athletes from all over the country to come and participate in this event because there are lots of prizes to be won.

“Last year the attendance was close to 600 athletes and this year we are expecting more than that number. We are also expecting some athletes from neighbouring countries to participate,” said Gatsi.

In last year’s edition of the event, the main 21km males contest was won by Millen Matende who romped home in 1 hour, 15 minutes, while Kelvin Pangiso weighed in second position after crossing the line just a minute after the winner.

It was indeed a tightly contested race as third placed Jonathan Chinyoka finished the race also just a minute after Pangiso.

Pencil slim Olympian, Rutendo Nyahora won the women 21km race after clocking 1 hour 26 minute, while Constance Nyasango came second when she finished the race in 1 hour 33 minutes.

Faith Nyasango was third after completing the race in 1 hour 37 minutes.

In the 10km men’s contest, Misheck Mabheka, Tendai Zimuto and Willack Nomore came first, second and third respectively, while Olivia Chitate, Neviah Maganza and Dzidzai Gumede dominated the females category of the same event in that order.
