A HIVE of activity will characterise the maiden Oktoberfest Beer Festival and Funfair which will take place tomorrow at Musangano Lodge. The lodge, situated along the Harare-Mutare Highway, will also host an array of performing and visual artistes led by talented Harare-based Afro-jazz diva Tariro NeGitare (loosely translated as Tariro and the guitar).

The Oktoberfest concept, which will be the first of its kind to be held in the eastern border city, is borrowed from the German funfair where people gather and feast on traditional sausages, German food, while beer will be consumed at a colourful event which is usually held in Munich in Bavaria, Germany.

It is the world’s largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair) which is attended by thousands of people from across the world. Tomorrow’s potentially intriguing event will see activities such as jumping castles (for kids), soccer and volleyball tournaments, scavenger hunt, bonfire and phoenix fire benders.

There is also a fashion show dubbed “Theresa Kuehl” as well as an entertainment segment called “Mutare Tales” where local performing and visual artistes will showcase their talents to scores of people expected to attend.

Songstress Tariro NeGitare, who has rubbed shoulders with revered local, regional and international artistes such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Jah Prayzah and South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo will perform with her live band.

‘‘Chipo Changu’’, ‘‘Mawara’’, ‘‘Ndisiye Ndakadaro’’ and ‘‘Uripi’’ are some of her popular songs.

The songwriter who toured Germany in 2013 and held several shows alongside German band, Jamaram, was this week expected to conduct various workshops with local artistes. Another local musical group, Chigapu Band, which came second at this year’s Chibuku Road to Fame provincial finals, will also provide entertainment.

In an interview, one of the organisers and Musangano Lodge manager, Leonard Bwanya, said preparations were at an advanced stage. Local radio station Diamond FM and Mabvazuva will partner Musangano Lodge.

“We are proud to host such a unique funfair. We have adapted a German concept were people come together and consume as much beer as they can while braaing and enjoying German sausage.

“The day-long will also give artistes an opportunity to showcase their talents. There are also exciting interactive platforms such as “Germany meets Mutare”. It is open to everyone. The event will start at 12 noon and will see people part with $5 to be part of the festivities,” said Bwanya.
