SCORES of youths from several wards in Nyanga South and Nyanga North constituencies will on Sunday gather at Nyanga Country Club for the second edition of the Nyanga is Supa Foundation Sports Tournament. The tourney, which is the brainchild of Nyanga South Member of National Assembly, Supa Mandiwanzira, will see sportspersons in disciplines such as netball, volleyball, soccer and darts battling for supremacy.

In an interview, one of the organisers, Richard Mandiwanzira, said teams in wards such as Mangondoza, Nyamhuka, Nyatate, Regina, St Mary’s and Nyautare had confirmed participation. Mandiwanzira said the potentially-intriguing contest was not confined to teams from Nyanga South, but would also incorporate teams from the neighbouring Nyanga North.

Nyafaru dominated last year’s inaugural tournament which was held in Ward 21. Only teams in Nyanga South participated in the inaugural tourney. Supa Mandiwanzira, who is also the Minister for Information, Communication and Technology and Courier Services, will be the guest of honour.

“Preparations are at an advanced stage and we are happy with the overwhelming support we have been getting from other stakeholders. We are working with the Zanu-PF provincial leadership to ensure that everything flows smoothly. Mangondoza in Ward 31, Nyamhuka in Ward 29, Nyatate in Ward 17 and Samanyika or Regina in Ward 13 are some of the teams that will participate in volleyball and soccer competitions, while in netball, Nyamhuka in Ward 29, Nyamatara in Ward Five, St Mary’s in Ward 30 and Nyautare in Ward Eight are ready for the showdown,” said Mandiwanzira.

He added that outstanding teams would walk away with trophies, cash prizes as well as soccer balls, netballs and volleyballs among other things. The event commences at 9am and ends at 4pm to enable teams to travel back to their respective homes early.

The tournament is meant to boost youths’ physical and mental well-being, while encouraging interaction and bonding.

“The sponsorship package has improved from last year. We have partners who are determined to see the tournament scaling to dizzy heights. This year’s event will be bigger and better and we like to urge people to come in their numbers and be part of the fiesta,” said Mandiwanzira.
