ZIMBABWE has got a huge opportunity for medical investment and should consider engaging entrepreneurs and other investors to establish more local health centres.

Officially opening Nyanga Health Centre last Thursday, Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Cde Supa Mandiwanzira, said there was need for collective efforts to ensure medical services were available locally. “The opportunity for medical investments is very huge in our country.

“I see it when I meet Indian doctors who can also be investors. “People are going to South Africa, India, Zambia, Malaysia and China, among other countries to seek medical attention. “We can bridge that gap by making sure that what they are travelling for is available here.

“There will be a huge financial impact if we establish health centres after engaging entrepreneurs and other investors and hire doctors and nurses to do the job. Let us not wait for Government to come and build a hospital and clinic for us,” said Cde Mandiwanzira who is also Member of National Assembly for Nyanga South.

The health centre is owned by Nyanga District Medical Officer, Dr Admore Jokwiro and his wife, Alice, who is also a medical doctor.  It is set to cater for thousands of villagers from across the district. Situated less than a kilometre from Nyanga village, the centre is bound to alleviate challenges bedevilling the Nyanga health sector where patients would travel for a distance to acquire medical services.

In a sideline interview, Dr Jokwiro, said: “Our patients were travelling to Rusape and Mutare to seek medical attention from doctors there. We are trying to complement the public health sector and address situations like prescriptions refills and chronic cases. We achieved this because of overwhelming support we received from the Nyanga community.”
